It didn't take long to find Xiva after an awkward goodbye with Lacey. Just like it had felt wrong to ask Xiva to help me with anything connected to LaceyâGod, why was that?âit felt a little off to tell Lacey about Xiva.
There was no romantic connection between Xiva and I. I could accept that I was attracted to her, that there was lust there, but I knew better than to let my heart get involved again. Lacey had shown me that no one could love me as I was, and there was no question I didn't deserve a woman like Xiva.
Not that I wanted her like that. That was crazy.
So, why did it feel so wrong to talk about one of them to the other? I didn't understand the feelings, so instead of focusing on them, I ignored them.
I'd told Lacey I had a comrade who could help me with the situation, one I trusted. She'd been worried about me, understandably, but she hadn't been able to stop me. I'd promised to come back as soon as I found something.
Seeing where Xiva was staying was painful, though. The buildingâmore of a warehouse reallyâwas crumbling, and this part of the city was one of the worst.
As I moved through the building, it surprised me I didn't have to ask her where she was. The bond tugged me toward her as if it were alive and fed up with me for staying away so long. It wanted us together, and I was smart enough not to fight it again. Not that I even wanted to.
She stood with her back to me in a small room. She turned as soon as I stepped inside. Her whole face lit up when she saw me, and her skin flared with intense emotion.
I couldn't help it. My body reacted the moment I saw her. I stood in the presence of a goddess, painfully beautiful to look at and so far beyond my reach.
She rushed to me, just as she had on the space station, and threw herself against my body.
I closed my arms around her. This was where she belongedâwith me.
She let out a small sob, and I tightened my hold. "What's wrong?" I asked.
She was crying. "Nothing. I'm just so happy to see you."
With great effort, I pulled back from her. Tears streaked down from her pink and purple eyes. I cupped her face in my hands and brushed the tears away with my thumbs.
"I was scared I wouldn't see you again," she whispered.
"Never.â My voice was hoarse with emotion. âI would never allow that. I am always going to make my way back to you."
"Don't ever shut me out like that again," she said. "Promise me you won't."
I hesitated. I couldn't promise that. I would do whatever it took to keep her safe, and at the time, it had seemed like that was what I had been doing.
Her hands gripped my shoulders.
"Never do it again, Kaidan. It doesn't help me to be kept away from you like that.
